지난 목요일 JumpStart물리치료 받고 오는데 근처에 원불교 센터가 이사와서 들려 보았다. 젊은 여자 교무님이 친절히 안내해주었다. 원불교에서는 실천불교로 몸과 마음의 건강을 최우선시 한다며 요가와 명상 프로그램을 설명해주며 노약자를 도와줄 수 있다고 해서 다음 목요일부터 오후 5 시에 와이프를 데리고 오겠다고 했다. 얼마나 다니려는지는 모르지만 나도 원불교에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 작년에도 집 근처 중국 문화 센터에서 노인들을 위한 다이치 클라스에 좀 다니다가 중국인들 떠드는 소리 듣기 싫다고 그만 뒀었다.

Not many American people call me by my first name Choong Nam, just Choong--one syllable for convenience. However, I was surprised tonight by someone who used to be my stand partner of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra more than 20 years ago, when I was working at Harvard and taking violin lessons at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, near the Harvard campus. Her name is Lynn Mulhern. I found her name on the winter concert program of Chestnut Orchestra of All Newton Music School, where I registered for a chamber music class for spring semester starting next Thursday evening. We all changed over the years, but I could figure out it was Lynn who played in the first violin section with her long thin hair, big eyes, and black wrist band on her right hand. Listening to Beethoven and Schubert symphony music took my mind back to the CSO days with warm reminiscences of our close friendship. We were both late violin beginners, sitting in the back of the 2nd violin section and sharing many interesting personal stories. She studied piano performance, but after injuring her right hand, she began to play violin. She also told me stories to trips to Russia to adopt 2 babies, and her husband, an engineer, used to bring 2 cute little boys to the concerts. They lived far west in Upton, taking one hour to come to Cambridge. During the concert, I was wondering whether she'd remember me or not and what should I tell her about my aging problems. To my great surprise, when I called her name after the concert, she looked at me and shouted “Choong Nam!” What a wonderful reunion!

Letter from Lynn

Glad you wrote. Your video playing Traumerei was beautiful and heartfelt. I can understand the benefits that you and your wife receive from it!
Do not stress in any way about the Chestnut Orchestra. Everyone is relaxed and mostly just happy to be there playing music! I find I don’t have a great desire to join a bigger, more intense orchestra because I like the people in the Chestnut so much! I now work part-time as a Vision Therapist and Thursday is one of my work days. I am on the schedule until 7 pm, but if I don’t have a patient, I can leave earlier and make orchestra rehearsal on time. If I do get a patient, I usually arrive late to rehearsal, eating “dinner” in my car on the way. Sometimes, I just skip rehearsal because it’s just too much of a scramble. 
Yes, I was struck with disbelief on Thursday. I saw you in the audience and I thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t place you. In my mind, you were living in Korea and that could not possibly be you, at a Chestnut concert. But once you spoke, I of course knew you. I still have all of the gifts you brought me from Korea, hanging up, or in use, so I would never actually forget you.
Next Saturday, I fly to Florida for a week. Sometime after that, maybe we can figure out a place to meet and catch up on life!
