내용
거트루드 스타인(Gertrude Stein)이 어니스트 헤밍웨이에게 "You are all a lost generation"라고 말한 데서 유래되었으며, 헤밍웨이가 자신의 소설 The Sun Also Rises의 서문에 이 문장을 인용하여, 널리 알려지게 되었다. 전쟁의 여파로 수많은 죽음과 허무함을 맞닥뜨린 잃어버린 세대의 작가들은 기존의 올바른 행동, 도덕성, 그리고 성 역할에 상충하는 인물을 중심으로 하여, 전통적인 관념의 무의미함을 부각하는 작품 세계를 구축하였다.[2]
