거트루드 스타인(Gertrude Stein)이 어니스트 헤밍웨이에게 "You are all a lost generation"라고 말한 데서 유래되었으며, 헤밍웨이가 자신의 소설 The Sun Also Rises의 서문에 이 문장을 인용하여, 널리 알려지게 되었다.
