Dear Dr. Ellinwood,	엘린우드 박사님,
Your very welcome letter bringing us the good news of Dr. Sturge's appointment to this field reached us by mail just in and we are all very glad that the Board is going to open a Station at Fusan. We also feel rejoiced that the mission is to be reinforced in this way as we ourselves as we look at the field and consider our number see how little we can do and feel that we are but a drop in an ocean. The prospect for work is no nearer open except that I think we will soon be able to do something in the way of school work and we have every reason to believe that the Korean government would welcome any such effort. There is however one seriously difficulty in the way of our doing much of that work that can be called in part self-supporting.	스터지인물 의사가 이곳 사역지로 임명받았다는 기쁜 소식을 전해주는 박사님의 편지가 방금 전 저희에게 도착했습니다. 본부에서 부산에 새로운 지부를 시작하게 된 것에 대해 우리 모두는 대단히 기뻐하고 있습니다. 사역현장을 바라보며 우리 선교사들의 수를 생각해 볼 때 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 얼마나 미약한지 보게 됩니다. 우리는 드넓은 바다 속의 물 한 방울 정도 밖에는 되지 않는 것처럼 느껴지기도 하는데 이렇게 우리의 선교사역의 힘이 강화되는 것에 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다. 학교 교육 사업을 위해 조만간 무슨 일을 하지 않는다면, 우리 사역의 앞길이 열릴 것이라 말할 수 없다고 생각합니다. 한국 정부에서 우리의 이러한 노력을 환영하리라는 것은 매우 분명하다고 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 이 사역을 해 나가는데 있어서 심각한 문제가 하나 있는데 그것은 어떤 의미에서는 자립(自立)의 문제라 할 수 있습니다.
Korean government in their schools have no charges at all but virtually pay the scholars for attending in providing then with their food, clothing, and a certain amount of money and it will therefore not be the easiest matter to find those that are willing to pay for what costs nothing elsewhere. If a free school were opened it would be filled at once if in addition we would pay the pupils enough to live on and in fact I have been told that we could have all that we could teach if the latter clause were left out but we feel that there is a danger of giving the Koreans the idea that we are backed by a rich board at home and that it would be a pretty good idea to become a Christian. There is one way in which we could begin work at once and be at the same time building up for Korea a Christian youth. My attention has been called to the fact that there are in Seoul a great many homeless and destitute children as orphans and those of illegitimate birth and they could be taken and clothed and fed and trained up in a right way and taught to love the Savior.	한국 정부는 그들이 운영하는 학교에서 일체의 교육비를 받지 않게 합니다. 오히려 학교를 다니는 학생들에게 음식과 의복과 일정액의 돈을 제공해 주면서, 학교에서 학생들에게 학업 비용을 지불합니다. 그래서 이렇게 전혀 돈을 들이지 않고 배울 수 있는 곳들이 있기에 돈을 내면서 배우려는 사람을 찾는 것은 대단히 어려운 일입니다. 만일 무료 학교가 개교를 하고, 우리가 학생들의 생활비용을 충분히 지불해 준다면 그런 학교는 곧 학생들로 채워질 것입니다. 사실, 저는 이런 문제가 해결된다면 우리에게서 배우려 할 학생들이 가득할 거라는 말을 들었습니다. 그렇지만 한국인들에게 우리가 본국에 있는 돈 많은 본부의 후원을 받고 있다는 인상을 줄 수도 있고, 그리스도인이 되는 것은 꽤 괜찮은 일이라고 생각하게 할 위험성이 있다고 여겨집니다.우리가 사역을 즉시 시작하게 될 수 있고, 한국을 위해 기독 청년들을 길러 낼 수 있는 한 가지 방법이 있습니다. 서울에 고아가 되어 곤궁한 처지에 있는 집 없는 아이들, 사생아들이 대단히 많다는 사실에 저는 주목하고 있습니다. 그 아이들을 받아 들여 옷을 입혀 주고, 음식을 먹여 주며, 진리의 길 안에서 훈련받게 해 줄 수 있을 것이고, 구주를 사랑하도록 가르쳐 줄 수 있을 겁니다.
I had been thinking about this for some time and wondering how we were to go to work as now would be the time when I received from a friend the sum of $100.00 to be used for missions in Korea. A place of the right size and in tolerably good repair could with this amount be obtained and put in order but then there were the running expenses to be thought of. This place however is not very near to us and as such a work would require continual watching it was thought best by both Drs. Allen and Heron not to purchase. Any place in this neighborhood would cost a great deal more and we are just now considering what ought to be done. The cost of running such a home per years, reckoning on the prices of clothing and food as they now are, with say from twenty to twenty-five inmates would amount to less than $500.00 and the cost of getting the house that is considered the best in every way by all who are out here would be between $400.00 and 500.00. The plan meets with Mr. Foulk's most hearty approval and as there are several reasons for beginning now we are very much tempted to do so. If this were stated there would be at the same time be in connection with it a daily school for all who would come. This is as far as we have gone and had we the means I do not doubt but that we could have both a boys and girls school before the year is through. I have been hard at work at the language and have managed to make some progress and think now that it is time that I was at some work.	저는 한동안 이 일에 대해 생각했었고, 지금이 적기라 보이는데 어떻게 이 일을 시작할 수 있을지 고민하고 있었습니다. 그런데 그때 제 친구 하나가 한국에서의 선교 사업에 쓰도록 100달러를 기부해 주었습니다. 손질이 제법 잘되어 있으며 알맞는 크기의 장소를 이 돈으로 구입할 수 있었습니다. 그렇지만 그 후에 운영경비에 대해서도 고려해야만 했습니다. 이 장소는 우리가 사는 곳에서 그리 가깝지 않은 곳에 있습니다. 이런 일은 계속 지켜보는 것이 필요한데 알렌인물과 헤론인물 의사는 그 장소를 구입하지 않는 게 좋겠다고 생각합니다. 근처에 있는 곳들을 사려면 훨씬 더 비싼 가격을 지불해야 하기 때문에 우리는 어떻게 해야할지 생각 중에 있습니다. 1년 동안 이런 고아원을 운영하는 비용은, 20명에서 25명의 아이들이 있을 경우에, 의복과 음식 등을 현 시세대로 계산해 보면 500달러 미만이 될 겁니다. 그리고 여기 있는 우리 모두가 보기에 모든 면에서 가장 좋은 건물을 구입하기 위해서는 400달러에서 500달러 정도가 필요할 겁니다. 푸크인물 씨도 이 계획에 대해 전적으로 찬성했습니다. 이 일을 시작하는 것이 합당한, 분명한 이유가 있으므로 우리는 이렇게 하고 싶은 마음이 간절합니다. 그 이유에 대해 말씀드린다면, 오고자 하는 아이들 모두를 대상으로 하여 ‘일일학교’와 이 일이 연계될 수 있다는 점을 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 우리의 경험상, 이렇게 될 것이라 생각합니다. 우리에게 필요한 수단이 갖추어져 있다면, 올해가 가기 전에 남학교와 여학교의 문을 열게 되리라 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 저는 언어 공부를 열심히 하여 어느 정도 성과가 나타나고 있습니다. 제가 일을 시작해야 한다고 생각하고 있습니다.
Owing to a badly built chimney my house took fire last night and it was a wonder that the whole house was not burnt down and as the floor of my hall was ablaze when I awoke this morning it is cause for great thankfulness on our part that no further damage was done. As it was the damage will not amount to over ten dollars. It showed somewhat as to what example will do and the influence we are having upon those around us when my boy in speaking of the fire after it was all out this morning and in mixed English and Korean 󰡐Master will say many thank yous(?) to God that it was not more serious' : and we have seen this also in the apparent surprise and almost horror shown by those around us when it is proposed to do anything on a Sunday.	부실하게 지어진 굴뚝으로 인해, 저의 집공간에서 지난 밤 불이 났었습니다. 제가 아침에 일어났을 때, 현관 마루가 불타는 것을 보았기 때문에, 집 전체가 다 타버리지 않은 것이 다행스럽게 생각합니다. 더 큰 피해가 없었던 게 우리에게 참으로 감사한 일입니다. 이번 사건으로 인한 피해액은 10달러가 넘지 않을 겁니다. 오늘 아침 불이 다 꺼진 후에 저를 시중드는 소년은 한국식 영어로 화재사건에 대해 이야기하면서 “주인님은 더 많은 피해가 나지 않아서 하나님께 많이 감사하다고 할 거예요.”라고 말했습니다. 이를 통해, 우리가 어떠한 본을 보이는 게 필요한지, 우리가 우리 주변에 있는 사람들에게 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지 알 수 있었습니다. 그리고 주일에 어떤 일이라도 해 보자고 제안하였을 때, 우리 주변에 있는 사람들이 놀라워하고 당혹스러워 하는 것을 보면서도 이러한 사실에 대해 생각해 보았습니다.
We observed the week of prayer here and on one night there were several Koreans present and our players went up most fervently that ere another week of prayer should roll round there may be many Koreans who shall join in the worship. Last night Dr. Allen received a letter from the Roman Catholic priest in this city asking him to attend a sick Christian woman Of course they did so at once but were unable to do anything for her besides giving her a little medicine to ease the pain. They wrote explaining the case to the Romanists and offering to attend her further if they so desired. It was reported to us not long ago that there were a great many starving people in Seoul and we at once organized to see what could be done. Finding a few worthy cases we attended to them and then employed a Korean to go around and see how much distress there was and to report to us all that were worthy. He was a man recommended to us for the work by my teacher. After spending four whole days at this work he reports that he can only find one case that is really worthy that of an old man without any relations and that all the other cases that he could find after sifting them down could either work themselves or had someone related to them who would support them. This has greatly relieved our minds and we have also been pleased to find a man that appears so trustworthy and who when offered pay refused it on the grounds that he was only helping in a good work and that he was glad to do it. He was a Romanist Christian and as he was a poor man I insisted upon his taking what it had cost him to stay in Seoul for those days.	우리는 이곳에서 기도주간을 가졌는데, 어느 날 밤에는 한국인들 몇 명이 이에 함께 참여하였고, 다음 기도 주간이 있기 전에 이 예배 모임에 많은 한국인들이 동참하게 되도록 매우 간절히 기도하였습니다. 지난 밤 알렌인물 의사는 서울에 있는 로마 가톨릭교회 신부인물에게서 편지를 받았는데 그 신부는 알렌인물에게 병환 중에 있는 한 그리스도인 여성을 진료해 달라는 부탁을 하였습니다.물론 즉시 그렇게 했지만 그 통증을 완화시키기 위해 약을 조금 주는 것 외에는 달리 할 수 있는 일이 없었습니다. 알렌인물은 가톨릭교회 사람들에게 이 상황을 설명하고, 그들이 바라면 그녀를 다시 더 진료하겠다는 내용의 편지를 보냈습니다. 최근에, 서울 안에 굶주리고 있는 사람들이 대단히 많다는 소식을 들었습니다. 그 소식을 듣고는 곧 바로, 우리가 할 수 있는 일에 대한 계획을 세웠습니다. 정말로 도움이 필요한 몇 사람들을 알게 되었고 그들을 돌봐 주었습니다. 그 후에는 한 한국인을 고용해서, “여기저기 돌아다니며 빈곤상태가 얼마나 심한지 살펴보고 우리에게 보고해 달라”고 했습니다. 그는 제 언어교사인물가 추천해 준 사람이었습니다. 나흘 내내 이런 일을 한 후에, “정말로 우리의 도움이 필요한 사람은 한 사람밖에 없다”고 전하는데, 아무런 연고(緣故)도 없는 한 노인을 알게 되었다고 합니다. 그가 자세히 조사해보니 그 이외 사람들은 자립할 수 있거나, 그들과 연관된 사람들 중에 그들을 도울 사람이 있었다고 합니다. 이 소식을 듣고 우리 마음은 한결 가벼워졌으며 무척 믿음직스러워 보이는 사람을 한 명 알게 되어 기뻤습니다. 우리가 이 사람에게 수고비를 전해 주려 했지만 “자신은 좋은 일에 참여해 도왔을 뿐이며 이런 일을 하게 되어 기쁘다”며 돈을 받기를 거절했습니다. 그는 가톨릭교회의 교인이었습니다. 그 사람은 형편이 어려웠기 때문에, 이번 일을 하기 위해 서울에 머무는 동안 들었던 경비를 받으라고 제가 강권했습니다.
