가야금 역사상 최고의 기재였다는 안기옥은 가야금산조의 창시자 김창조의 수제자이고 한국근대음악사에서 손꼽히는 음악가인 정남희의 스승이다. <br />
천재음악가로 불리는 안성현은 안기옥의 아들이다.<br />
일제강점기 협률사, 조선음악연구회, 조선창극단, 한성준의 조선음악무용연구소, 최승희무용단의 음악단장 등 한국음악사에 빼놓을 수 없는 주요한 활동에 참여했다.<br />
광복 이후에는 북한에서 활동하며 조선고전악연구소 초대 소장과 협률단 단장, 국립고전예술극장 총장을 거치면서 북한의 민족기악 및 창극 공연 및 창작 활동을 주도했다. <br />
자신만의 독특한 가락을 개발하여 남도음악과 민족음악의 진작에 크게 공헌하였고 중국에 가야금산조를 전파했다.<br />
정남희와 공저로 <가야금교칙본>(1958)을 남겼다.<br />
