바다에서 표류하였습니다. 이 날은 흐렸습니다. 정오를 지나자 서북풍이 또 불었습니다. 
배는 다시 뒤로 물러나 동남쪽을 향하여 밤새도록 갔습니다. 
신은 권산, 고면, 이복 등에게 말하기를, 
“너희들은 키를 잡아 배를 바로잡고 있으니 방향을 몰라서는 안 된다. 
내가 일찍이 지도를 훑어보니 우리나라 흑산도에서 동북쪽으로 향해 가면 곧 우리 충청도와 황해도의 경계이며, 
정북방은 곧 평안도의 경계이며, 정북방은 곧 평안도와 중국의 요동(遼東) 등지요, 
서북방은 곧 우공(禹貢)에 나오는 청주(靑州)와 연주(__州) 지역이며, 
정서방은 서주(徐州)와 양주(揚州) 지 역이다. 
송(宋)나라 때 고려와 교통할 적에 명주(明州)에서 바다를 건너왔으니, 명주는 곧 대강(大江) 이남의 땅이며, 
그 서남방은 곧 옛날의 민(閩) 지방로서 지금의 복건로(福建路)요, 
서남방을 향하여 조금 남쪽으로 가다가 서쪽으로 가면 섬라(暹羅), 점성(占城). 만랄가(滿刺加)등의 나라요, 
정남방은 곧 대유구국(大琉球國), 소유구국(小琉球國)이요, 
정남방으로 가다가 동쪽으로 가면 곧 여인국(女人國)과 일기도(一岐島)요,정동방은 곧 일본국과 대마주(對馬州)]이다. 
지금 배가 풍랑에 표류된 지 닷새 동안 밤낮으로 서쪽을 향하여 갔는데, 
거의 중국의 땅에 닿았을 것으로 생각된다.불행하게도 또 이 서북풍을 만나서 동남방으로 거슬러 가게 되니, 
만약 유구국과 여인국에 이르지 않는다면 반드시 천해(天海) 밖으로 흘러 나가서, 위로 은하수에 닿게 되어 
가이없는 곳에 도달하게 될 것이니, 어찌 할 것인가? 너희들은 내 말을 기억하고서 키를 바로잡고 가야만 한다"라고 하였습니다. 
권산 등은 “날이 개어 해와 달 그리고 별자리로 헤아린다고 해도 해상에서는 사방을 가리기 힘든데, 
지금은 구름과 안개가 짙게 드리운 것이 여러 날 계속되어 새벽인지 저녁인지 밤인지 낮인지도 알 수 없습니다. 
단지 바람의 변화만으로 사방을 미루어 짐작할 뿐이오니, 어찌 바른 방향을 가려내어 알 수 있겠습니까?” 
라고 하면서, 서로 머리를 맞대고 소리 내어 울었습니다.

boat again turned off its course and headed southeast. We travelled through the night. I said to Kwon
San, Ko-myon, and I-hok, “In holding the tiller and trying to keep the boat steady, you must know
where you are going. I have examined maps, and northeast from Hūksan Island of our country is the coast
of our Ch’ungch’ong Province and Hwanghae Province. Due north are P'yong-an, Liao-tung, and such
places. Northwest is the coast of the old Ch’ing-chou and Yen-chou of Yü kung. 13 Due west is the area
of Hsü-chou and Yang-chou. In Sung times traffic with Koryo sailed from Ming-chou, which was the land
from the Yangtze River south.14 Southwest is the old Min territory, the present Fu-chien-lu.15 South-
southwest and then west are the countries of Siam, Champa, and Malacca. Due south are Great and Little
Ryukyu. 16 Due south then east is I-ch’i-tao of Nü-jên-kuo. 17 Due east is Tsushima-shu of Japan. We
have now drifted with the wind five days and nights, going west. I believe we almost reached Chinese
soil, but then, unfortunately, we met this northwest wind and turned back to the southeast. If we do
not reach Ryukyu or Nü-jênkuo, we shall sail out beyond the Sea of Heaven and rise through the Milky
Way, and there will be no end. What are we to do then? “Mark my words. Keep the helm steady.” Kwon
San and others said, “Even if the sky were clear and we could calculate by the sun, moon, stars, and
planets, we still could not know the four directions of the sea. Now there are clouds, fog, and
darkness day after day. We cannot even keep track of dawn and dusk, day and night. We only guess at the
four directions from changes in the wind. How can we distinguish a right direction?” They huddled
together and wept.
