My chest and diaphragm were both stiff, my hands and feet were numb, and there were chills throughout my body. My breath was short in my throat. Chòng Po, Kim Chung, Son Hyo-ja, and Ko I-hok prayed for me without effect. The men we led were at a loss what to do. Yi Chong and Makkům wept at my side. There was one man- I do not know his name - who knew a little about treating sicknesses and saw that I was in danger. He punctured my ten finger tips with a big needle, and black blood spurted forth. The man said, “Very dangerous, very dangerous!” Kim Chung and Chong Po hastened to inform the Bureau of Receptions of the Ministry of Rites; a report from the Central Post Hotel also reached the Ministry of Rites. They sent Chu Min, a Doctor of the Imperial Academy of Medicine, to come and treat my sickness. Chu Min felt my pulse and said, “This sickness is primarily because of injury to the seven affections and secondly because you have caught cold. That is why you have this sickness; you must take good care of it.” Chong Po said, “What medicine shall we use to treat it?” Chu Min said, “Treat it with fragrant fire vitality tonic [hsiang-huo-tach’i-tang].” He hurried to the Imperial Academy of Medicine and came back with a drug. Between 1 and 3 a.m. Li Hsiang came from his house and said to me, “You will now put on the hat and clothes, go into Court, and acknowledge graciousness. You must not be slow.” I pointed to the mourning hat on my head and said, “in my mourning, if I wear brocade and a light silk gauze hat, will I be easy in my heart?” Li Hsiang said, “If you were beside the coffin, your father would be important. Now you are here; know only that here is the Emperor. When the Emperor is gracious it is a great breach of ministerial courtesy if one does not go and thank him. That is why by our Chinese code of etiquette, if a prime minister goes into mourning and the Emperor sends a man with a funeral donation, though (the minister] is in deepest mourning, he must put on festive dress and hurry to the Palace to bow his thanks. Only after that may he change back to mourning dress.
 “Imperial graciousness must be acknowledged. To acknowledge it, one must be inside the Palace. To get inside the Palace, one may not be in sackcloth. It is a matter of expediency, like giving a hand to a drowning sister-in-law.14 If you fall in with the festive mood now, you will be bowing to circumstances.” I said, “When the awards were received yesterday, I did not receive them personally. How would it be if now, at the time of the acknowledgement of graciousness, I again ordered my staff and those below them to go and bow?" Li Hsiang said, “When you received the things, there was no elaborate series of bows, and it was all right to delegate someone. But now, the Ministry of Rites and the Court of State Ceremonial have discussed the matter of your acknowledging graciousness and have already put in a memorial that says, 'The Korean barbarian official Ch'oe Pu and others . . .'You are at the head of the list. Can you afford to be absent?”. I could do nothing but lead Chòng Po and the others behind Li Hsiang and walk to Ch’ang-an Gate. Still, I could not bear to put on festive dress. Li Hsiang himself took off my mourning hat and put on a light silk gauze hat. Not only that, he said, “When state business comes up, there is a way to rise from mourning and return to duty. You will now go in through this gate in festive dress; when you have finished the rite of acknowledgement and left through this gate again, you will change back to mourning dress. It will be only for that short while. There can be no complete regulation without exceptions.” By that time, the outer gates of the Imperial City had already been unlocked, and the ministers of daily attendance were entering in order. Compelled by circumstances, I put on festive dress and entered the Palace. We passed through a one-story gate and two large two-story gates. Then there was another big two-story gate, which was Wu Gate. Troops were drawn up smartly, lights burned brightly. Li Hsiang seated me in the central courtyard. Soon, drums were beaten at the left end of Wu Gate and bells struck at the right end. Three arched gates opened, and at each gate two big elephants stood on guard, their forms spectacular. Just before daylight, the officials of the Court lined up by ranks in front of the gate. Li Hsiang led me to my place in the Court ranks and then led Chong Po and the others to form a separate group. They followed after the students of the National University. After five genuflections with three kowtows each, we went through Tuan Gate and passed through the Gate of Ch'eng-t'ien, which was inside Ta-ming Gate. We went to the east, passing out through Ch’ang-an Gate again, and I put back on my mourning clothes. We passed Ch’ang-an Street and returned to Jade River House. Yi 'lyo-ji, Hồ Sang-ni, and Kwon San came in the clothing that had been awarded them and visited me. They said, “Before this, men from Sõnŭi under Junior Director Yi Sõm also drifted here, but the Emperor did not graciously make awards. Next we come, and we alone receive these unexpected awards and bow before the Emperor. What good fortune we have had!” I said, “Can it possibly have been by chance? An award is awarded for merit. What merit have you in China? Drifting to death you were saved and will be returned alive to your country; the Emperor has already been extremely gracious, the more so since you worthless bodies have been let inside the Vermilion Gate to receive those awards. Do you understand that? The Emperor's taking care of us and giving us awards are due to the virtue of our King, who fears Heaven and serves China, and not to you. Do not forget our King's virtue, do not treat Imperial gifts lightly. Neither damage them nor lose them; do not sell them to others. Let your descendants keep them as treasures forever.”

 Sub-officials of the Ministry of Rites, Cheng Ch’un, Wang Min, and Wang Huan, came and summoned Chong Po and the other forty-odd men in my charge and went back. I stayed alone at the house. Chong Po and the others entered the Palace, received the awards, and came back. The things I had received were one undyed grass cloth gown, one inner red satin round-collar, one black and green satin lined gown, one blue satin money-bag, one pair of boots, one pair of felt socks, and two rolls of green cotton cloth. For each of the forty-two men from Chong Po down, there were one padded jacket, one pair of padded trousers, and one pair of Wu boots. Li Hsiang demanded money and, with a man at the side of a market who wrote letters for money, wrote an account to report to the Court of State Ceremonial. It said, “In the matter of awards, the Koreans Ch’oe Pu and others, having drifted across the sea to Chekiang and been sent to the capital, have now respectfully received awards of gowns, padded jackets, boots, and other things. It is fitting that their names be reported to the Court of State Ceremonial. On the morning of the 20th Day, Fourth Month, they will acknowledge the Imperial graciousness.” Li Hsiang said to Chòng Po, “Inform your official that tomorrow morning he is to come in festive dress and give thanks for the Emperor's graciousness.” There was a ceremonies official, Hsü, whose given name I have forgotten, who came and inspected Chong Po and the others, putting on their hats and sashes and teaching them the order of prostrations. Although Hsü was called an interpreter, he did not understand our language well. I ordered Chong Po to go with one gate-keeper to seek Li Hsiang's house and tell him how I felt: “Mourning for a parent is something that one must observe. To wear beautiful clothes is to be unfilial. I am human; how can I take off my mourning clothes and put myself in the position of being unfilial ?” Li Hsiang said, “I discussed that today with His Excellency the Minister of Rites. For the time being, mourning for a parent will be unimportant and Heaven's graciousness important. In the fourth watch of the night, all the necessary award clothing will come to the outside of East Ch’ang-an Gate. Do not cause delay.” In the evening, fifteen men and women from Ta-ning Garrison, Tatary,13 came in flight from their country and lodged at the West Central Post Hotel.

Identity cards of the Bureau of Maps of the Ministry of War have been received by the Ministry and sent successively on.
