==국문 해설문==

임실 운암망루는 광복 이후 이념적 갈등의 시기에 임실군 주민들에 의해 지역 방위의 목적으로 건립되었다.

이 시기에 우리나라는 남과 북으로 갈려지고 급기야 1948년에 제주 4·3사건 그리고 10·19 여순사건이 일어나 우익과 좌익으로 갈라진 사상적 분열 속에 1950년 6·25전쟁이 일어났다.

이 시기 지역 방위를 위해 주요 지역마다 망루가 설치되었고 초소역할로서 당시 경찰과 방위대원들의 근무처였으며 무기와 탄약보관은 물론 적들의 동향을 살피고 작전계획을 세우는 장소로 활용되었다.

그러나 6·25전쟁 이후 1960년대 경제개발과 1970년대 새마을운동을 거치며 망루는 철거되거나 방치되어 의미가 크게 퇴색되어 갔다.

그러나 우리 고장에서는 두 곳에 있는 망루를 주민들 스스로 관리하다가, 6·25전쟁의 유물로서 중요성과 보존의 필요성을 느껴오던 중 문화재청으로부터 2014년 9월 1일 근대문화유산 등록문화재로 지정되어 관리되고 있다.

This watchtower, one of two in the area, was set up by local residents of Imsil in the turmoil leading to the Korean War (1950-1953). It played an important role in allowing fighters to observe the movements of approaching enemies during the war. Watchtowers such as this one were set up in strategic locations and were manned by the police and local militia. They were also used to store weapons and ammunition. After the war, the watchtower lost its original function, but it was well preserved by local residents. Due to its significance as a strategic structure during the Korean War, it was designated as an early modern cultural heritage by the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2014.
