At the time, the current was from the sea to the island, and the wind was from the island to the sea. The boat followed the wind and turned back, and we avoided disaster. In the evening we came to a large island. It, too, had cliffs and rocks rising steeply. We wanted to moor the boat but could not. I-hok took off his clothes, jumped into the water, and swam ahead, guiding the boat. He climbed the shore of the island and fastened the boat to it. The men, overjoyed, tumbled out recklessly, sought out a stream, took the fresh water in their cupped hands, and drank. Turning from drawing the water, they wanted to prepare food. I said, “In the extremity of hunger the five organs are stuck together. If you suddenly eat to the full, you will surely die. It is better first to drink rice water and follow it with congee. You should stop when you have had the right amount.” The boatmen all boiled congee and sipped it. Since there was no place to escape the wind on the island, at night we freed the boat and went.

-  바다에서 표류하였습니다. 이 날은 비가 내리고 동풍이 어제처럼 불었습니다. 오후에는 바다 빛깔이 도로 푸르러졌습니다.<br />이에 앞서 제주도를 떠날 때 뱃사람이 무지한 탓으로 식수를 거룻배에 싣고 따르게 하였는데, 풍랑에 표류된 뒤로는 서로<br />어긋나서 놓쳐버리고 말았습니다. 타고 있는 배에는 물 한 그릇이 없어 밥을 지을 수 없었습니다. 밥도 먹지 못하고 물도<br />마실 수 없었지만 어찌할 도리가 없었습니다. 권송이 신에게 말하기를,“보아 하니 배 안의 사람들 가운데는 황감(黃柑)과<br />청주(淸酒)를 가져오기도 했는데, 마구 먹어서 남은 것이 별로 없습니다. 청컨대 이를 한 데 모아 배 위의 창고에 운반하여<br />저장했다가 목마름을 풀도록 하시기 바랍니다”라고 하였습니다. 신은 즉시 거이산에게 명하여, 배 안의 행장을 모두 뒤지게 하여<br />황감 50여 개와 술 두 동이를 얻었습니다. 손효자에게 말하기를,“배를 함께 탔으면 호인(胡人)과 월인(越人)도 한 마음일 터인데, <br />하물며 우리들은 모두가 한 나라 사람으로서 정은 골육지친(骨肉之親)과 같으니, 살아도 같이 살고, 죽어도 같이 죽어야 한다.<br />이 감과 술은 한 방울이 천금과 같다. 네가 이를 맡아서 함부로 쓰지 말고, 배에 탄 사람의 절박한 목마름을 풀어 주는 것이<br />좋겠다”라고 하였습니다. 효자가 사람들 가운데 입술이 타고 입이 마른 사람을 보아서 고루 나누어 마시게 하여 겨우 혓바닥<br />만 적시게 하였습니다. 며칠이 지나자 황감과 술이 모두 없어지니 어떤 사람은 마른 쌀을 잘게 씹고 제 오줌을 받아 마셨지만,<br /> 얼마 안 가 오줌마저 없어지고 가슴속이 건조해져 목소리가 나오지 않아 거의 죽을 지경에 이르렀습니다.<br />이 때 마침 비가 내리니 배 안 사람들이 손으로 봉옥의 처마를 들고 거기에 떨어지는 물방울을 받기도 하고, 모자를 그릇삼아<br />아래로 떨어지는 빗물을 모으기도 하고, 돗자리를 구부려 뿌려지는 빗물을 받기도 하고, 돛대와 노를 세워 중간에 종이끈을<br />묶어서 뚝뚝 떨어지는 물방울을 받기도 하면서 한 잔 물이라도 기어코 얻어서 혀로 핥았습니다. 안의가 말하기를,<br />“옷에 비를 적셔 이를 짜서 마신다면 얻는 바가 실로 많을 터이지만, 뱃사람의 옷은 모두 바닷물에 젖어 비록 비에 적셔<br />짜내더라도 마실 수가 없으니 어찌하겠습니까?”라고 하였습니다. 신은 즉시 간수해 둔 옷 몇 벌을 찾아내어 최거이산에게<br />비에 적신 뒤 이를 짜게 하니 거의 몇 병이 되었습니다.김중으로 하여금 숟가락으로 이를 나누어 마시게 하였습니다.<br />김중이 숟가락을 집어 들면 배 안 사람들이 입을 벌리기를 마치 제비 새끼가 먹이를 먹여주기를 바라는 듯하였습니다.<br />이때부터 비로소 혀를 움직이고 숨을 쉴 수가 있어 조금 살고자 하는 마음이 생기게 되었습니다.

We were not able to boil water or cook food and had nothing<br />to eat or drink. We were in a desperate condition. Kwon Song told me, “I have noticed that some of the men<br />in the boat brought yellow oranges and refined wine, and they are greedily eating them up. Let us have them collected<br />and taken to the upper storehouse. We can store them and relieve our thirst with them.” I ordered Kõisan to search<br />through all the baggage in the boat. He got more than fifty yellow oranges and two jugs of wine. I said to Son Hyo-ja, <br />“When they are together in a boat, men of Hu and Yüeh are like one.<br />That is even more so with us, all men of one country, of the same flesh and bones.<br />If we are to live, let us all live at the same time. <br />If we are to die, let us all die at the same time. These oranges and this wine are all there are.<br />One drop is worth a thousand pieces of gold. You take charge,<br />therefore, and do not waste any, so that they can be used to relieve the thirst of the men in the boat.”<br />Hyo-ja inspected the men and gave those whose lips were parched and mouths cankerous some oranges and wine to eat and drink.<br /> He gave them only enough to moisten their tongues. In a few days both the oranges and wine were consumed. <br />Some of the men chewed dried rice grains fine and caught their urine in their hands to drink. <br />Before long the urine, too, dried up. <br />Their diaphragms dry and burning, unable to utter sounds, they were almost dead. <br />At that point, rain fell. Some of the boatmen held up the awning flaps and caught the drops, and some used rain hats and cauldrons to gather the drops. <br />Some curved mats and got them, and some tied paper strings to the mast and oars and took what dripped down. <br />By these means they hoped to get some water and lick it off with their tongues. <br />An Ui said,<br /> “If we took the moisture from clothing wet by the rain and drank it, we should really get a good deal.<br /> But the boatman's clothes have all been soaked by salt water.<br />Even if we soaked them in the rain for moisture, we could not drink it.<br />
-<br />That being the case, what can be done?”<br /> I then picked and brought out several pieces of clothing that had been stored.<br /> I ordered Kõisan to let them be soaked with rain and to collect the moisture from them.<br /> It came to several jars, I ordered Kim Chung to ration it with a spoon and let the men drink.<br />Chung raised the spoon, and the boatmen opened their mouths wide, like fledgling swallows waiting to be fed.<br /> Only afterwards were they able for the first time to move their tongues and belch. They felt a little more like living.
